THS journalism students earn big win

ths journalism The Tomball High School newspaper was recently recognized by the Texas Association of Journalism Educators (TAJE) in a statewide contest as being among the state’s best newspapers in a variety of categories, including page design, personal columns and editorial cartoons.

“Winning made me feel like all the effort we’ve put forth was worth it,” features editor Alexis Aguren, junior, said. “We know what we can accomplish, so we have to raise the bar and hopefully accomplish more.”

The paper placed in two of the top three Page One designs.

“It feels good to know that our paper is getting recognition for all the hard work we’ve put into it,” co-editor Melanie Madden said. Madden also won an individual award in the Personal Column category for her column about her grandmother’s battle with Alzheimer’s.

The yearbook was also honored as having the best theme in the state for last year’s yearbook, which is a key category among the yearbook competition.

“Getting a Number One superior rank for our theme was such an honor,” editor Becca Whiteman said. “I feel so proud that all the hard work we put in received great recognition.”

Now, the wait begins as both publications await the TAJE Conference in April, where the state’s top overall newspapers and yearbooks will be named.
