New sports complex hoped to spur economic development in Waller

Legacy Sports Park, located on Betka Road in Waller, recently opened and owner Paul Jenkins expects the fields to help economic development in the area.

The facility, which includes six fields, a 10,000-square foot batting cage and training facility, has been under development for nearly a year.

Jenkins said the sports park was designed with tournament league baseball in mind. He oversees two Waller tournament leagues, the Generals and the Envy.

Players involved in tournament league baseball are able to play up to 160 games a year, Jenkins said.

“It’s the higher competitive end (of baseball),” he added.

Before the construction of the fields Jenkins said the leagues were forced to rent fields and practices were difficult to arrange.

Now with the new sports park Jenkins will be able to help his teams grow. He plans to build eight to 10 additional fields to include softball regulation size fields.

He said the main goal is to help younger players make their high school baseball teams and help high school level players get signed with a college baseball team.

In addition to opening a place for the teams to practice, Jenkins has also created a new place where traveling tournament teams can come to play.

Tournament league teams can currently sign up to play tournaments on the new sports park website.

Jenkins said between 40 and 100 teams could sign up to play each weekend. He hopes to have tournaments at least 42 weekends a year.

The tournaments could promote economic development in Waller, he explained.

Each team consists of 30 to 50 players and if a tournament of 40 teams came to Waller that could equate to more than 1,200 visitors.

“All of those teams would have to eat and have a place to stay,” he said.

In the future, Jenkins said businesses would most likely move into the area.

In the coming weekends, Jenkins will have a Russian Olympic team visit the park for two tournaments.

Then on Aug. 7 Legacy Sports Park will host an International World Championship tournament which will bring in teams from South Africa, Lithuania, China, Australia and more.
