| SOS seeks community help for Easter donations |
|
As Easter approaches, the Society of Samaritans (SOS) in Magnolia has set a goal to give 500 Easter baskets to economically disadvantaged children who would otherwise not receive one for the holiday.
SOS has asked for assistance from the community, citing a need for Easter baskets or supplies to make the baskets. Items such as eggs, candy and small toys are acceptable.
Special Projects Director Lynnette Gibbons said the organization prefers the baskets to be made by those donating them rather than buying baskets already made at the store because it makes the basket “special.”
“It’s such a fun project, because they can get their kids involved,” she added.
According to Gibbons, 197 families have already signed up to receive Easter baskets from SOS. She said her goal is to provide 500 Easter baskets if she receives enough donations.
The deadline to bring baskets or supplies to SOS is April 18. Volunteers will assist in assembling the baskets April 19 through 22. Families who have registered will be able to pick them up on April 23.
In order to register a child for an Easter basket, they must be 12 years old or younger and attend a school within the Magnolia Independent School District.
In addition, SOS will provide an Easter feast on April 23 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Montgomery County Community Development Center located on Friendship Drive. Gibbons said The Ark Church and Open Table Ministries will be providing 1,500 meals.
