Failed golf course copper theft results in two arrests

A Tomball man and a Spring man were arrested in connection with an attempted theft at a local golf course that left the facility facing more than $100,000 in damages.

According to the Harris County Pct. 4 Constable’s Office, on June 9 deputies responded to a call at about 5:40 a.m. at the Gleannloch Farms Golf Club on Champions Forest Drive in Spring. Club employees told investigators that two male suspects entered the premises and attempted to steal “several hundred feet” of copper wire.

The two men were unsuccessful in their attempt to take the wire, but in the process, “severely damaged” the facility’s electrical system, the Constable’s Office reported. Their efforts to steal the wire reportedly ignited a fire, which local fire departments responded to.

“It is believed that the lights and the sirens scared the suspects away,” the Constables Office said.

They estimated that total damages to the facility may eclipse the $100,000 range.

Investigators reviewed photographs of the two suspects and their vehicles which were taken by the facility’s security cameras. Indentifying information regarding the suspects and their vehicles was distributed to area law enforcement officials.

Later that night, at about 9:30 p.m., Dep. Atkins discovered a vehicle matching the description of the suspect’s vehicle at a Raceway gas station in the 1700 block of Spring Cypress.

Officers likely had little problem finding the suspect vehicle. The Constable’s Office described the vehicle shown in the surveillance video as a late 90s or early 2000s white Ford F250 or F350 with black bed rails, with “4x4” inscribed on the rear fenders, a fuel dispensing pump in the bed and an emergency light beacon on top of the cab.

Officers detained two men, 41-year-old Chad Johnson of Spring and 38-year-old Randy Rasberry of Tomball. Both men were charged with felony theft, while Johnson was also charged with possession of a controlled substance after officers found methamphetamine on him.
