| Operation ‘Chester’ checks sex offender compliance |
|
Throughout each year Montgomery County Sheriff Tommy Gage and the Sheriff’s Office Sex Offender Compliance Unit, along with Constable Offices, local police departments and the Texas Department of Public Safety work to complete routine compliance checks on registered sex offenders.
From June 6 through 10 Operation “Chester” began. The goal was to complete a countywide sex offender compliance check within one week of every sex offender registered in Montgomery County, totaling around 750.
Ten teams of two worked throughout the day and many times into the night to complete the compliance checks.
“The Sex Offender Countywide Compliance Check was completed in one week and was a success,” Gage said.
With detectives and patrol from the Sheriff’s Office, DPS Criminal Investigations and the Montgomery County District Attorney’s Office investigators, all 750 offenders were checked. If the registered sex offender was not at home a red door hanger was left on their door.
Last year 25 criminal cases were filed. This year there are more than 25 cases under investigation to determine if an offender was out of compliance. Each investigation will be reviewed by the District Attorney’s Office for criminal charges.
Three arrests have been made to date. One suspect was arrested for an ICE deportation warrant, another for a probation violation warrant and one arrest was made after a sex offender had not reported a change of address and was found living at another location.
