Cake competition to benefit Alzheimer’s research

The Heritage Tomball, a continuing care retirement community, is partnering with The Alzheimer’s Association to host a “Cake Wars” style event on Thursday, July 28 from 5-7 p.m. where area culinary experts will be competing for best in show in a “Battle of the Bakers: Battling to End Alzheimer’s” competition.

A $10 donation entitles attendees to watch the live competition while enjoying chocolate fountain treats, cupcakes, access to gourmet silent and live auction packages, champagne and a commemorative glass.

All decorating teams have connections to treating those impacted by Alzheimer’s as most of them are chefs in area long-term care communities.  One contestant has an even more personal connection.

Retta Pryor, owner of Cakes by Retta in Baytown, is packing her flour and fondant and traveling to Tomball to compete in honor of her mother who is currently battling Alzheimer’s and lives in a facility in the Houston area.

Pryor had initially planned to sky dive on July 31 in honor of her mother’s birthday.  She bought the voucher, steeled her nerves, persuaded her sister that this was the thing to do, only to get the phone call telling her the facility had gone out of business. Only moments after that, she received the notice from Houston Southeast Texas Alzheimer’s Association CEO Richard Elbein asking her to compete in this event.  Pryor and her sister decided this was what they were meant to do to honor their mother by putting their energy into ending this devastating disease.

More than 5 million Americans suffer with Alzheimer’s disease and even more families and caregivers are impacted daily. This bakery battle will not end the war against Alzheimer’s, but it will be one sweet event that will leave you with the feeling of satisfaction of helping a worthwhile cause while treating your taste buds.

The Heritage Tomball is located at 1221 Graham Drive in Tomball.
