Local organizations Magnolia/Tomball YMCA, the Society of Samaritans (SOS) and the Magnolia Rotary Club are helping Magnolia ISD students by donating back packs, supplies and clothes for the upcoming school year. The YMCA has begun its annual Operation Back Pack for Tomball ISD, Magnolia ISD and surrounding areas. Office Director Gail Avera said the YMCA, located on FM 1774, is currently accepting back packs, school supplies and monetary donations. She suggested those wanting to donate should purchase a back pack, fill it with school supplies and a write a note of encouragement. The YMCA Operation Back Pack ends Aug. 13. Back packs will be distributed around Aug. 19. Avera said the organization spends a few days putting supplies and back packs together. In addition, the YMCA uses any monetary donations to purchase more supplies and back packs as needed. Last year the Magnolia/Tomball YMCA was able to supply nearly 200 children with back packs and supplies. Those wanting to sign their children up for supplies may call 281-356-4077. The Magnolia Rotary Club is supporting the Magnolia/Tomball YMCA and back-to-school efforts as well. The club made a monetary donation to the YMCA for additional supplies and back packs. SOS is also accepting back packs, school supplies and new clothes for Magnolia ISD students. The organization is still seeking donations, child sponsors and volunteers to help sort through the donations. SOS is using the former annex building on Friendship Drive as a donation center. Special Projects Coordinator Lynette Gibbons said the deadline to sign up to receive school supplies and clothes has passed. SOS has already taken on 68 families, including 180 children, she reported. A list of each of the children’s needs and a school supplies list for each grade are posted on the SOS website. If residents are sponsoring a child, all items purchased must be brought to the SOS donation center by Aug. 5 between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m., along with the SOS receipt located on the website. Gibbons said parents who have signed their children up will be able to pick up the school supplies and clothes on Aug. 8 and 9, depending on when they signed up.
