Roof collapses at a Tomball church, reasons still unexplained

roof collapse Members of the Tomball Missionary Baptist Church, located on FM 2978, have been left without a place of worship after a large section of the roof collapsed on Aug. 6. An 80 to 100-square-foot section of the church's roof caved in during the incident.

The Tomball Fire Department responded to the site to ensure that no one was trapped in the debris. Fortunately they found the building vacant after a careful search.

"I couldn't tell you what caused that," Tomball Fire Chief Randy Parr said. "That's something a structural engineer would have to determine."

Parr went on to explain that his department had a difficult time reaching anyone associated with the church.

"We tried for an hour and a half to try and get (in touch) with (church leaders)," Parr said.

The Harris County Fire Marshal's Office (HCFMO) was then contacted in order to secure the building, Parr informed.

"They were called to issue an order to secure the unsafe building," he stated.

HCFMO inspector Jose Garza went on to explain, that while his co-worker never entered the building because of the unsafe conditions, it was obvious that the building was uninhabitable.

Numerous attempts were made by The Tribune to contact church officials, but were unsuccessful. As of press time last week it is unknown if the church plans to temporarily hold services elsewhere.
