Tomball City Council tackles tough issues at recent meeting

A building blocking the view of motorists was one of several issues discussed by the Tomball City Council during their regular meeting on Aug. 15.

Glass Tex is currently constructing a 1,500-square-foot building in the 200 block of East Main. The problem lies in where the building is located.

“Several residents called in to complain because the building was right up to the property line, which unfortunately is allowed in that area,” Councilmember Mark Stoll said.

City ordinances currently allow for building to be constructed right to the edge of the property line. This means properties along Main Street can be constructed right next to the road, since no state right-of-way exists past the roadway.

“The city met with them to see if we could come up with a solution,” Stoll said.

The solution, which passed the council unanimously, is that Glass Tex will move the building back at least 20 feet from the roadway. The city will reimburse Glass Tex for costs associated with moving the building.

Stoll estimated that it will cost the city about $67,000.

“This will be addressed in future ordinances, so it doesn’t happen again,” Stoll said.

Other issues taken up included a tabling of the fountain project, as the council wants to see other design proposals.

The council will hold a special public hearing Aug. 22, regarding the proposed property tax increase that the council is studying.

Stoll said it should be an interesting meeting.

The meeting is set to start at 6 p.m. at City Hall.
