SOS accepting registrations for Thanksgiving, Christmas drives

The Society of Samaritans (SOS) will begin opening its doors to families in need of food and toys within the Magnolia ISD area for the Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays.

The organization provides baskets with food and necessities to area families prior to Thanksgiving and Christmas in an effort to help them enjoy their holidays.

SOS Special Projects Coordinator Lynette Gibbons said the Thanksgiving and Christmas baskets include a frozen turkey and all the sides and ingredients for a traditional meal.

For families needing assistance for Thanksgiving and Christmas, sign-ups are scheduled to begin on Monday, Oct. 17. The sign-ups will continue each Monday Oct. 24, 31 and Nov. 7 and 14. Families can register at the former fire relief center located at 38207 FM 1774 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Gibbons said residents who sign-up during October and November will be signed up for both Thanksgiving and Christmas baskets along with Christmas toys.

Christmas sign-ups will resume Nov. 28, Dec. 5, 7, 12 and 14 from 10 a.m. 2 p.m. at the same location.

Gibbons said the deadline to sign-up for a Christmas basket and toys is Dec. 14.

Starting this year, SOS requires that all applicants for Thanksgiving and Christmas provide a copy of their 2010 Income Tax Return, proof of current income and identification showing that they live in the Magnolia area.

Thanksgiving deliveries will be held at the Montgomery County Community Development Center on Nov. 21 beginning at 9 a.m. Christmas deliveries will be on Dec. 19 and 20.

Volunteers will arrive at the Montgomery County Community Development Center on Friendship Drive to pick up the baskets and have their routes assigned to them.

In 2010 SOS gathered and distributed 400 Thanksgiving baskets, 600 Christmas baskets and 1,474 Magnolia area children received toys.
