Magnolia Rotary gearing up for Spaghetti Bowl

The Rotary Club of Magnolia will host its annual Spaghetti Bowl fundraising event Friday, Oct. 14 from 5 to 7 p.m. The bowl will be held at Magnolia High School prior to the Magnolia vs. Magnolia West football game.

This marks the sixth year that the Rotary Club has held its Spaghetti Dinner before the football game between the two Magnolia ISD varsity football teams. However, it is the fourth year that they have called it the Spaghetti Bowl.

The Spaghetti Bowl is Magnolia Rotary Club’s biggest fundraiser.

The Rotary Club will provide a spaghetti plate with salad and bread, along with cake and cookies. Each plate is $7 for adults and $5 for students. Rotary is anticipating that it will serve more than 500 students.

For the first time since the Spaghetti Bowl began, the Rotary and Interact clubs have agreed to incorporate a spaghetti eating contest. Those competing will be separated by elementary, junior high and high school.

Each winner will receive a $50 gift card. The contest will be held at different times throughout the night.

Just before school ended in May, art students at both schools were asked to submit T-shirt designs to the club that incorporates both schools. The winners were students Taylor Bowman and Diana Hernandez from Magnolia High School (MHS). This is the first year that the T-shirt winners were students from MHS. Each winner will receive $100.

Deborah Rose Miller, who spearheads the Spaghetti Bowl, said more than 75 designs were submitted.

In addition to the student earning money for their design, the art department at MHS earns $250.

This year’s T-shirt includes both high school mascots vying over a helmet filled with spaghetti. The back of the T-shirt includes local sponsors.

The high schools’ Interact clubs, which are affiliated with Rotary, will be selling the T-shirts during school hours the week of Oct. 10 for $10. T-shirts at the game will cost $15.

Miller said the Rotary club plans to sell 600 T-shirts.

Money raised from this year’s T-shirt sales, sponsorships and dinner plates will help the Magnolia Rotary Club support its scholarship programs and community service projects.

One of its annual programs is to send students to its annual Rotary Youth Leadership Awards camp.

In addition, the Magnolia Rotary Club is working on a plan to help fire victims. Money raised will help this project, Miller said.

The Rotary Club will hold a silent auction at the Spaghetti Bowl. Auctions items include spirit baskets, igloo ice chests, autographed jerseys and more. Money from the silent auction will benefit the elementary school choir programs.

Elementary choir groups will also be performing at the bowl.
