Holiday parade features historic military horse unit

tomball parade horse cav The U.S. Army 1st Cavalry Division, Cavalry Horse Detachment based at Ft. Hood, will be featured in this year’s Tomball Holiday Parade, Nov. 19, beginning at 10 a.m. on Main Street. The 1st Cavalry Division, Horse Cavalry Detachment is the last horse mounted cavalry unit in the U.S. Army and brings to life the spirit and proud heritage of the United States Cavalry.

Presented by the Greater Tomball Area Chamber of Commerce (GTACC) for 46 years, the Tomball Holiday Parade theme this year is, All Texas All the Time.

“I think the Cavalry Horse Detachment and the parade are a perfect match this year,” GTACC Parade Committee member Christine Leard said.

The detachment is organized and equipped to represent the division as an 1870-era "horse soldier" troop, complete with government issued cavalry uniforms and weapons.

Sgt. Dewan Godfrey, a 1990 Tomball High School graduate and operations sergeant of the horse detachment, said he is looking forward to coming home for this Saturday’s holiday tradition.

“It’s great to come home and it’s great for Tomball to see this outstanding horse detachment,” he said.

At 2 p.m. the 1st Cavalry Division, Horse Cavalry Detachment will give a mounted drill and weapons demonstration at the Suburban Ranches Horse Club arena, located at 24415 Hufsmith Kohrville Rd., on the FM 2978 west access road.

The 30-minute demonstration is free to the public and troopers will be available for visits after the demonstration. It includes drill maneuvers at the walk, trot and gallop. The weapons portion of the show demonstrates the mounted use of the Cavalry Saber, Colt .45 caliber Revolver, and Springfield Carbine, along with a M1841 light mountain howitzer cannon. All troopers in the unit are regular Army personnel.

More than 40,000 people are expected for this years parade, according to GTACC. The event will feature more than 150 floats. Music from area marching bands, the contestants for Miss Tomball 2012 and a special appearance from Santa Claus will also be on hand.
