Relay For Life of Magnolia to host kickoff rally

The American Cancer Society Relay For Life of Magnolia committee is set to hold its annual “Relay For Life of Magnolia Kickoff Rally” at 6 p.m. Jan. 16 at the West Montgomery County Community Development Center on Friendship Drive.

Relay For Life of Magnolia encourages any residents to attend, including seasoned team members or residents looking for more information about the organization and upcoming event. This is the opening event leading up to Relay For Life of Magnolia, Publicity Chair Mindy Just said.

Relay For Life is the signature event of the American Cancer Society. It is an overnight event that mobilizes communities throughout the country to celebrate survivors, remember loved ones and empower others to fight back against a disease that has taken many lives.

“Relay For Life brings together family and friends to celebrate those who have survived cancer, to remember those who have lost their battle with cancer and to fight back against the disease that has robbed so many of so much,” Just said.

Relay For Life of Magnolia is set to begin at 7 p.m. April 27 and end at 7 a.m. April 28 at the Magnolia Junior High football field.

Teams form to raise money for the event by recruiting sponsors and by hosting games or selling items during the event. Teams can camp on the football field and members of each team take turns walking around the track for the duration of the event.

“Food, games and activities provide the entertainment and fundraising opportunities, while planned times for solemn peaceful reflection and remembrance remind everyone of the importance of what Relay For Life is all about,” Just said.

The Relay For Life of Magnolia committee’s goal is to raise $100,000 this year, which will go directly to the American Cancer Society. Just said the organization is off to a good start with eight teams already signed up to participate.

“If the Magnolia community reaches this goal, our Relay For Life of Magnolia Event Chair Jesse Shore will be having her head shaved on stage at the Magnolia Relay at 4 a.m. April 28,” Just said. “She will be bald, so that someday, no one else will have to.”

The kickoff rally is open to the public. Teams may still sign up for Relay For Life of Magnolia online or at the event scheduled for April 27. For more information, visit relayforlife.com/magnoliatx.
