Concordia Lutheran choir wins state championship

Students and teachers at Concordia Lutheran High School have a new reason to sing a joyful praise.

The high school advanced four large groups, ten medium ensembles, one pops group and 14 soloists to the 2009 Texas Association of Private and Parochial Schools (TAPPS) State Choir competition.

After all the events were tallied, Concordia walked away with the title of State Champion.

While competing at the TAPPS competition, the concert choir earned the moniker of a “Sweepstakes” choir, the highest award given at the state level, for receiving straight “1” ratings for their concert and sight-reading performances.

“It was really exciting and special for us,” Choir Director Tavis Schlicker said. “We have been working really hard for this. It was awesome.”

Concordia Lutheran left the TAPPS competition with a score of 625. The second place school had a score of 580.

Schlicker, who is assisted by Debbie Shoemaker, said the Concordia choirs have been working hard all year performing at clinics, chapels, church services, concerts, parties and competitions to get ready for the TAPPS competition.

Senior Choir President Rachel Lake said, “It’s been a long time coming and we worked really hard. It felt great to be there and do what we did. I’m really going to miss choir and my friends. This really means a lot to me.”

Seventy-five of Concordia’s 400 students are involved in the choir.
