| Tomball, Magnolia ISD postpone travel in wake of swine flu |
|
Local school districts kept a close watch on the developing swine flu epidemic last week, opting to cancel all out of district student travel at least until May 11, spokespersons for both Magnolia and Tomball ISD stated last week.
“We’re taking direction from state and local health officials,” Tomball ISD’s Staci Stanfield said. “We weigh the options as to if we should send students (to events) if they are in a large group environment.” Stanfield said the May 11 date could change. Last week the University Interscholastic League postponed all competitions until May 11, as well. Magnolia ISD posted a statement on its website alerting parents of its decision. “The District will continue to monitor any developments regarding this matter and will revise and update student travel policy as conditions change or as according to UIL rulings,” the district stated. “MISD will maintain its standard of care to ensure the safety and health of all district students and staff.” On Wednesday of last week Tomball ISD sent out notifications to parents of its students regarding the district’s reaction to the epidemic. “We sent a swine flu letter home explaining to parents that the district has been in touch with the health department, in touch with the county, monitoring updates and information coming from them and government agencies,” Stanfield said. At press time last week, four Houston area schools had closed after it was believed a student at those schools may have contracted swine flu. No cases were reported at either Tomball or Magnolia ISD campuses last week.
