Spring man tries to crash into Tomball officer, arrested for DWI, assault

Tomball Police arrested a Spring man late last month after they say he repeatedly attempted to ram his vehicle into the personal car being driven by an off-duty Tomball Police Officer.

William Briggs, 32, was arrested at approximately 9:45 p.m. May 29 and charged assault with a deadly weapon and driving while intoxicated after he allegedly tried to run Tomball PD Officer Murray off the road several times in what Capt. Ricky Doerre is describing as a road rage incident.

According to Tomball Police, both Murray and Briggs were traveling northbound in the 27000 block of SH 249 when Briggs swerved into Murray’s lane at least three times. Briggs later pulled his vehicle in front of Murray’s, slammed on his brakes, and put his vehicle in reverse, trying to collide with Murray’s vehicle, Doerre said.

Murray called Tomball PD dispatch and reported the incident. A short time later, officers arrived on the scene and apprehended Briggs, whom Doerre says was highly intoxicated on Hydrocodone.

Doerre said that the arresting officer, Officer Reel, asked Briggs if he knew that a Tomball Police Officer was driving the other vehicle, but Briggs speech was so slurred, officers could not understand his response.

“I don’t think he knew the officer by any means,” Doerre said. “It was just a case of road rage.”

Briggs’ vehicle never made contact with Murray’s, Doerre said, and there were no reported injuries in the incident.
