“We want to help the public avoid standing in line by going online,” Jackson said.

Automated docketing for civil, family and criminal trials will send attorneys weekly reminder e-mails letting them know of each scheduled hearing. Public criminal data and a docket search for civil and criminal data are just a few new features that will be available this summer.

Jackson also spoke about historic documents. Among the many historic cases on file at the District Clerk’s Office are details of a property dispute between Republic of Texas presidents Sam Houston and Mirabeau B. Lamar, a former slave’s fight to regain her freedom in 1847, and a lawsuit involving the construction of Hermann Hospital, which is considered the start of the Texas Medical Center.

A collection of these and other historic documents dating from 1837-1925 is available for public viewing in the District Clerk’s Historic Document Reading room in Room 200 of the Harris County Civil Courthouse at 201 Caroline.
