Magnolia city council adopts Community Foundation to run annual festival

The Magnolia City Council unanimously passed a resolution June 9 to make the Magnolia Community Foundation (MCF) the host and planner of all future Magnolia Music Festivals.

The resolution relinquished the responsibilities of setting up, promoting, and hosting the Magnolia Music Festival from the city of Magnolia to the Magnolia Community Foundation.

Mayor Jimmy Thornton, who is the founding president of the MCF, said the city is looking for five to seven people to be on the board of directors.

“If anyone wants to be associated with the foundation, write me a letter,” said Thornton.

The MCF, a non-profit community organization, donated $1,000 to several local charities last month, including to the Magnolia Education Foundation, Shining Star 4-H, the Magnolia Rotary Club, the Montgomery County Food Bank, the Amobi Okoye Foundation, the Tomball/Magnolia YMCA, the Magnolia Lions Club, Society of Samaritans and the Friendship Center.

In addition, two local youths were awarded $500 scholarships through the Foundation.

The council members agreed at the meeting that by choosing a non-profit, the community would benefit more, since the money raised could be given to charity, and that the group would receive more donations.

The music festival was held for the first time in March of this year and is scheduled to take place in mid-May of next year. The inaugural festival featured country music star Aaron Watson and made more than $50,000 in profit and the city hopes even more will be raised next year.

“We want 10,000 people to come next year and raise $100,000,” said Thornton.

Let's just hope that he doesn't do the picking of the directors nor handle the money .. Best of luck, sounds like fun...
