Tomball AARP expanding its membership

Tomball AARP Chapter 5409 will celebrate its second anniversary on June 28, the date it was registered as a corporation.

The chapter membership has grown from just a handful to 98. Members come from both Harris and Montgomery Counties, with 29 from Montgomery County and 69 from Harris County. The group has set their sights on having 140 members by year’s end. Meetings are held the second Thursday of each month at 1:30 p.m. at the Lone Star College Library Community room. The group is seeking a new facility to accommodate its expanding membership.

At left, Barbara Jennings, the “One Woman Broadway Show,” performs during a recent AARP meeting.

The meetings are a combination of business and fun. After the business meeting, a speaker or performer provides entertainment. Barbara Jennings, the “One Woman Broadway Show,” recently sang both patriotic and Broadway show songs.

The chapter also has a day trip each month. Transportation is furnished by Harris County Pct. 4 buses. Some of the places visited include attractions in Galveston, Huntsville, Brenham, Port Arthur and Austin. There is generally a small charge for these trips.

The group also supports Tomball Emergency Assistance Ministries by donating non-perishable food. All of the group’s activities are coordinated by volunteers.

Anyone who is a member of the National AARP can join the chapter. Dues are $8 per year. Visit a monthly meeting, or call Stan Brown, president, at 281-255-4662 for more information.

Why should I upgrade to Internet Explorer 7? Microsoft has redesigned Internet Explorer from the ground up, with better security, new capabilities, and a whole new interface. Many changes resulted from the feedback of millions of users who tested prerelease versions of the new browser. The most compelling reason to upgrade is the improved security. The Internet of today is not the Internet of five years ago. There are dangers that simply didn't exist back in 2001, when Internet Explorer 6 was released to the world. Internet Explorer 7 makes surfing the web fundamentally safer by offering greater protection against viruses, spyware, and other online risks.
