| Magnolia Council narrows city marshal position to four candidates |
|
The Magnolia City Council is closing in on appointing a new city marshal, deciding between the top four candidates as chosen by Judge John Purvis.
At a July 14 meeting, the Council voted to review the four candidates’ resumes and possibly interview each candidate for the position later this month. Currently, the City has more than $1 million in outstanding warrants that haven’t been collected, Purvis said. The position has been vacant since Jeri Carpenter resigned in May after nearly three years as city marshal. Purvis told the Council he has received several resumes and phone calls inquiring about the position, which he said he advertised with the Texas Municipal League, and his top choice for the position is Mike Wethington, a police officer in Stagecoach. “We have a lot of money to collect,” Purvis told the council. “I personally think he is the best man to do it.” Wethington had previously assisted Carpenter collecting warrants, Purvis said. The other three candidates were not identified. In additional city council actions, Deputy Secretary Debra Brent was officially named interim city secretary by a unanimous vote. She will fill the position until a new city secretary is hired. Police Chief Paul Michna addressed the Council regarding the new speed limit on Nichols Sawmill Road, which has been increased from 30 to 40 miles per hour. The new signs will soon be posted along the road. Construction for paving improvements on Kelly Street will begin after the Council unanimously approved a bid by O’Malley Engineers.
