| Small businesses in Magnolia feeling the heat |
|
The Magnolia ice cream shop, which opened in 2008, will shut its doors by late August, said owner and Magnolia resident Jacki Burke. She said she has already started applying for jobs in home health care in anticipation of her business closing. “I’ve been open a year and there’s just not enough support from the community,” she said. “And a lot of the community had asked for it. It just doesn’t make sense.” Located centrally in Magnolia near the intersection of FM 1774 and FM 1488, Burke’s store competes with nearby restaurants McDonald’s and Sonic. Burke said she needs 50 customers a day to keep the store going and at an average of $2.25 a cone, she feels it is a reasonable price. Members of the community had even gone to a city council meeting in May of 2008 to voice their desire for a local ice cream shop. Besides the Hutt, there are no other ice-cream only shops in Magnolia, Burke said. “For a small business to succeed, the community needs to support it,” Burke said. At a recent city council meeting, Burke, along with Cindy Hitchcock, owner of Trail Mix Coffee House in Magnolia, voiced their concerns to the Council during the public comment portion of the meeting about what they believe is a lack of community support of local businesses. But they’re not alone. “Small businesses are struggling,” said Karen Cavallaro, a senior consultant in the Small Business Development Center at Lone Star College-Cy-Fair who has been helping small businesses build in Magnolia. “There’s a lot of fear out there and people are holding back,” she said. “Individuals aren’t spending, companies aren’t spending and this economy needs people spending.” Since the start of the current economic downfall, many large companies and corporations have filed for bankruptcy, leaving thousands unemployed. Among the fallen: Many businesses in the food service industry. Metromedia Restaurant, a Plano-based company that operates and franchises popular chain restaurants such as Bennigan’s and Steak and Ale, filed for Chapter 7 bankruptcy in July 2008. In August 2008, Mrs. Fields Famous, the parent company of over a thousand TCBY and Mrs. Fields Cookies stores, filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy. “Restaurants are hurting quite a bit,” Cavallaro said. “I think that there’s a lot of room for a shift in personal spending. I think twice about going out to eat now; I used to go out more but that’s something that’s easy to cut off the budget.” Operating a small business in a small town can be tough, Cavallaro said. “I’ve heard it’s difficult because you have to know people,” she said. “If you are a newcomer, people have got to get to know you and trust you.” The Chamber of Commerce is an important resource and is “very supportive” for any small business owner, Cavallaro said. She also recommended that business owners factor in the location of their business. “Location is huge,” she said. Cavallaro’s advice to potential small business owners? Stay healthy and do your homework. “Do your diligence on your business, make sure it's something you really want to do and that it could be successful; know what your objectives are and what’s important to you,” she said. Cavallaro also emphasized the importance of health in the demanding world of running your own business. “Make sure you have emotional and physical stamina to withstand the rigors of small business ownership,” she said. “Know that it’s not a joyride and you’re in for years of hard work and get a good group of people to assist you.”

2.25 $ a cone ? Heck I can buy an entire half gallon of Blue Bell for 3 bucks and make 20 cones...we don't need ice cream shops in this economy...If Magnolia was not such a speed trap and out of control cop haven..I would drive there more often to shop....if Magnolia does not clean up it's act...more businesses will be going under soon. Why are the local police so rude out there ? They work for us.

Magnolia is nothing more than another parasite of The Woodlands.

Magnolia has fought hard not to be a part of the Woodlands.

Fought hard? It is extemely doubtful that The Woodlands wants anything to do with Magnolia. The Woodlands is all about upscale shopping and residential areas, Magnolia has nothing The Woodlands would want.

As for the town whiner that is just fine that you can get ice cream at the store. First off it is noveltie things that you can not get in a grocery store that are in my shop. The problem with people like you are that you whine about things and when confronted hide behind others. You put down things you know nothing of and this is a free country so people have the choice to go out or not. And for your information a half gallon of blue bell is 6 dollars and you can not get all blue bell flavors in the half gallon size. I am also sure you can not get pretzel cones in the grocery store either. I am sure you have never been in my shop to see so before spouting off about my shop you need to see the positive things this shop has done for our kids. Giving all of our children free ice cream for good grades and perfect attendance. Have you given our kids a reason to do good in school. The kids come in so proud they earned that ice cream. I can say I have made a difference to those who matter. And the heck with the rest of you big mouths that dont have nothing better to do than talk trash

I watched the fight the newer part of Magnolia had with the woodlands. Granted it didn't come as far down as the city limits but yeah the Woodlands is out there looking to expand and would love to have a piece of Magnolia. Jackie has a point, move! You're obviously not happy here go find that little piece of heaven that you can own. Wonder how long it will be till you're not happy there either

To Citizen Cane-The woodlands is also all about the trees that they won't let you cut down in your own yard. It's also about custom homes versus tract homes. Poor areas of the Woodlands versus the rich and even richer. You couldn't pay me enough to live in the woodlands. If I had that much money, no one would be telling me anything about my house. Or make me drive the congested woodlands parkway.

Thanks for the lesson on The Woodlands, not that anyone asked for it. The fight you speak of is the portion of Magnolia that will never be in the city of Magnolia. Most people in that area would probably prefer to be considered The Woodlands instead of Magnolia given that a large number of the community thinks that Magnolia is a dirty place.

Jacki I am so sorry that your business is not doing well. Maybe this article will help to promote some new business your way.
Magnolia has been my home for many years (50) and I must say I would not care to live anywhere else. I have loved this town and would do anything possible to see it get on the right tract. Being in the city limits is more reason for we, the citizens, to realize that it is ultimately our problem and at ELECTION time take back our city. We hope that with the use of hotel tax and advertising we can do more to see that our businesses are supported. That is also the job of the 4A and 4B to use money for these endeavers. City Officials are just not respecting our monies. They think whatever suits their fancy they can do. This is not true. There are laws of the State of Texas providing the right and wrong of using funds. We are not the Woodlands, we are Magnolia and should do all we can to support it. We know that there are problems at City Hall and now is the time for we the people to step in and stop the mis-management of funds that is on going. People, it is your tax dollars that are being wasted by greedy personnel and elected officials. I really hate to say these things, but yes, truth sometimes hurts.

Jo a Windham. What have you done for the city lately? You have to do more than throw around unfounded accusations. Yes we need to be aware of what's going on in the city and with our elected officials. But haven't you been on the bandwagon to get rid of Ryan Kelley? What's he done except carry out the decisions of City Council. He has no power yet you and the others here are constantly berating him as the sole person who got this city in trouble. Are you suggesting the use of hotel tax to support all the businesses.
I'm sorry Jackie, I'm sorry your business is closing too. Seems like 50 cones a day is not alot to ask. I'll be by for mine this evening. How about you Joann?

I don't comment when people can't spell my name. Sorry for you Vivian. You sound upset because we know the truth about what is going on.

Not upset at all. Everyone I talk to calls you Jo ann. But please don't be sorry for me. And you only think you know what's going on, that's the sad part.
