| MISD test scores show improvement |
|
Magnolia ISD students have shown big gains in SAT, ACT and AP test scores during the 2008-09 school year, according to newly-released results.
At an Oct. 12 board meeting, assistant superintendent Clydene Freeman presented the results to the board and audience members. The biggest gains in SAT results showed a 15 percent increase from the previous year in the number of students who took the SAT, compared with the statewide results, which showed a 3.8 percent decrease in the number of students taking the test. The results also showed a 32 percent increase in the number of minority students taking the test. MISD students who had previously taken the PSAT had higher SAT scores than those who didn’t. The same was true for those who took Advanced Placement (AP) classes, according to the report. “It was an excellent thing,” Freeman said. The positive results, however, were not surprising to Freeman. “We were pleased with the results,” she said. “What we hoped would happen, happened.” Freeman added that she believes the positive numbers are a result of two advanced academic coordinators that were hired two years ago who have helped and encouraged students to take the exams. A career and college advisor, Chelette Stephenson, who works at Magnolia High School, has helped in pushing students to take the exams for future college preparation, Freeman said. “Those kids that might not have signed up before, did,” Freeman said. “She’s the one that’s really impacting the kids taking the test. She has done an outstanding job.”
