New Year’s task force nets 71 arrests

The Harris County Sheriff’s Offices’ (HCSO) effort to curb drunk driving during the New Year holiday weekend resulted in nearly 400 traffic stops and 71 arrests.

In cooperation with local and state law enforcement agencies, Harris County sheriff’s deputies directed a major effort against driving while intoxicated on the evening of Dec. 31 and in the early hours of Jan. 1, when holiday celebrations frequently lead to illegal and dangerous behavior on the roads.

The preliminary results show that the HCSO made 393 traffic stops, which resulted in 24 charges for DWI.

In addition, sheriff’s deputies made five felony warrant arrests, 14 misdemeanor warrant arrests and 12 other felony arrests.

The HCSO organized the task force action to help prevent the deaths, injuries and property damage that can stem from DWI-related offenses and traffic violations that typically spike during the holiday season.

Other agencies that participated in this special effort included the Houston Police Department, the Metro Police Department, the Humble Police Department and the Texas Department of Public Safety.

The operation was focused on north Harris County and was funded partly by federal grants administered by the state.
