Kitchen fire thought to be cause of meat market blaze

A grease fire is thought to be the cause of a blaze that erupted at about 6 p.m. Jan. 12 at the Celaya Meat Market No. 10 on Tomball Parkway.

According to the Tomball Fire Department, crews responded to a 9-1-1 call and discovered “flames and heavy smoke” inside the rear of the building. The fire was confined to the back of the meat market and the roof system over the area where the fire started.

The rest of the facility, the Department stated, received heat, smoke and water damage. Two other suites in the building, as well as neighboring buildings, received smoke damage “due to a common roof and attic system.”

There were no injuries in the fire.

After the fire was extinguished, Tomball Fire Marshal Doug Sanguedolce and Fire Investigator Tommy Nicholson investigated the origin and cause of the fire.

“A brief interview with a worker in the meat market revealed that a large pot of cooking grease was left unattended in the kitchen,” the Department stated.

When the worker returned, he saw the fire and attempted unsuccessfully to extinguish it. He then called 9-1-1 and everyone in the building was able to evacuate safely.

The Tomball Fire Department was assisted by Magnolia, Rosehill, Cypress Creek, Ponderosa and Klein Fire Departments. Northwest EMS also responded to the scene.

According to the Tomball Fire Department, the incident is still under investigation to determine the exact cause of the fire.
