TPD joins national crime mapping program

Have you ever seen flashing red and blue lights in your neighborhood and wondered what was going on? Do you want to find out how safe your neighborhood really is? Now you can, through a new partnership between the Tomball Police Department and CrimeReports, creators of the National Crime Map, at www.CrimeReports.com.

"Providing timely, accessible and usable information to our citizens is one of our top priorities," Chief Robert Hauck said. "And partnering with CrimeReports gives us the ability to keep the public informed."

He added that the map will be updated every 24 hours and that citizens can sign up for free email crime alerts. "Information is power," Hauck added. "And we hope that providing this information at no cost to the community will prevent crime in our neighborhoods."

The Tomball Police Department is joining a list of nearly 600 other law enforcement agencies of all sizes across North America who are sharing their crime information with the public through the map, like Boston, Dallas, San Francisco, Portland, Washington D.C., Los Angeles County and more.

During a Jan. 18 Tomball City Council meeting, Hauck gave a presentation to council members of how the site works. The program is based on Internet mapping software and provides users with a graphical interface displaying where crimes take place, as well as the location of registered sex offenders

The data can be sorted by date, distance, crime type and more.

"A better informed community is a better police force," Hauck said.

You can access your local crime map and sign up for daily, weekly, or monthly email crime alerts at www.CrimeReports.com or by selecting the CrimeReports widget at www.tomballpd.com.
