|
A Spring man was recently arrested after he opened fire on a Harris County Constable’s deputy following a brief chase.
Brian Matthew Olivares, 24, of Spring was arrested and charged with attempted capital murder of a police officer after his involvement in a shootout near Hooks Airport. According to the Harris County Constable’s Office, Dep. H. Menz was on a routine patrol assignment at approximately 8 p.m. on Feb. 16 on FM 2920 near Cedar Oaks Drive. When Menz turned onto Cedar Oaks, he noticed a red truck backing towards his patrol vehicle. Menz activated his emergency lights and the truck came to a stop. According to the Constable’s Office, Menz approached the vehicle and asked Olivares for his driver’s license. Olivares allegedly refused and drove off. A brief chase ensued in which Menz followed Olivares northbound on Cedar Oaks, where Olivares pulled into the driveway of a mobile home in the 18800 block of Cedar Oaks. At that point, police say Olivares began shooting at Menz with a handgun. Menz stopped his vehicle and “exited to cover” and returned fire, the Constable’s Office stated in a release. Neither Menz nor Olivares were struck in the firefight. Menz called for backup and officers were able to apprehend Olivares without further incident. The Constable’s Office stated that the matter is still under investigation and it is not known how many rounds were fired during the incident. Attempted capital murder of a police officer is a first degree felony.
