Letter to the Editor

I am writing in regard to the recent events relating to Magnolia Judge John Purvis. I am concerned that many of the people who have moved into the Magnolia area recently and do not know Mr. Purvis are getting the wrong image of Mr. Purvis. I have been privileged to know Mr. Purvis for the 38 years I have lived in Magnolia and would like to let everyone who has not had the chance to meet him know that he is a very good man. Mr. Purvis has lived in the Magnolia area his entire life and he and his family have done many wonderful things for the community.

Regarding how things were done in his capacity as Judge. Fortunately, I never had to appear before Mr. Purvis, but I am sure he treated anyone who did appear before him with dignity, honor and the practical, common sense approach of the man I have known for so long. While he may not have been the picture perfect, letter of the law, lawyer type judge some people might expect, I firmly believe he is a man of principle and would not have knowingly done anything to hurt the City of Magnolia or any individual.

I believe he was just doing things the same way they have been done for years and years, and if it were not for the recent economic crisis, this situation would not have become such a front-page story. While it is obvious that Magnolia is changing and it may be time for a change in the style of judge Magnolia has, I for one will miss Mr. Purvis and believe the Magnolia community will lose a certain bit of the country personality that draws people to Magnolia as the old-timers like Mr. Purvis retire out of public service.

I was called for jury duty for Judge Purvis' court. I found it was handled as professionally as all of the ones I've been to in Conroe. So that can not be touted as the reason for his termination. The City of Magnolia is grasping for excuses with this one. Much like all the others.

It has been the desire of Kana and Kelley to get rid of Judge Purvis for quite some time. The council didn't have the courage to dismiss Judge Purvis so they hired a consultant to come in and make a big deal out of every little thing so they could tell the public that they had no choice but to let the Judge go. They hired a consultant for the police department too so they could get rid of Bo Crabtree because Thornton and Williams has wanted him gone for a very long time. See a pattern?
It's election time, nothing is ever the council's fault.
