With a little less than three weeks remaining in the regular season, the Lady Cougars have all but assured themselves of a postseason berth. But with most Tomball softball teams in recent years, getting to the playoffs is not the only goal.

With a rock-solid pitching staff that includes ace Shelby Lancaster, the Lady Cougars are setting their sites on Austin and a run at the state title.

If the regular season is any predictor, Tomball is certainly one of the early favorites for such a run.

The Lady Cougars opened district play March 3 with a 4-3 win over Klein and followed that up with maybe their most impressive performance of the season, a 15-0 shellacking of Westfield. Wins over Klein Oak, Klein Forest and Dekaney followed.

However, while the Lady Cougars sit atop the district standings with a perfect record, they have done so by knocking off the teams fighting to stay out of the cellar in 13-5A.

Klein, Westfield, Klein Oak, Klein Forest and Dekaney are combined 5-12 in district play, with Westfield, Dekaney and Klein Forest winless in district play.

The two biggest challengers to district-leading Lady Cougars are no doubt Klein Collins and Spring, both of whom sat at 4-1 in district play and just one game off Tomball’s lead.

Things began to toughen up last week when the Lady Cougars hosted the Spring Lions March 26. Results of that game were unavailable at press time. Tomball will follow that contest by traveling to take on Klein Collins in a tough back-to-back on March 30.

Those two games will certainly set the tone for the second round of district play, which begins April 1 when Tomball takes on Klein.
