Waller Bulldogs win District soccer title

whs soccer On March 12 the Brenham Cubs came to town to play the Waller Bulldogs for the district championship in at Waller ISD Stadium. For the second year in a row, the final district game has cost the Cubs a championship. Last year in Brenham, the Bulldogs beat the Cubs in a shootout that ended up making the Willis Wildkats the district champs.

Again this season, the Bulldogs beat the Cubs with a fantastic finish in the last 10 minutes of the game. Brenham scored in the first half to take the lead, 1-0. That score remained throughout the second half until late in the game. A ball was played in front of Brenham’s goal and was won by Sergio Vega, but he couldn’t find what he was looking for and passed to Will Garcia, whom immediately shot it. The ball deflected slightly off of a Brenham player, but not enough to keep it out of the goal.

Four minutes later, Jose Perez placed a corner kick down low in the box, which Alex Rodriguez was able to head out to Vega. Vegas’ shot was able to find the back of the net. The Cubs came right back and had a great opportunity for a score to tie, but fortunately for the Bulldogs, the shot went wide and Waller was able to hold on to the lead for the final few minutes of the ballgame.

With the win, the Bulldogs earned a bye in the first round of the playoffs.
