First place in sight as Cougars head into second round of district play

Six games into the district season, the Tomball Cougar baseball team finds themselves in a familiar position: near the top of the district standings and poised to make another deep playoff run.

At 5-1 in 13-5A play, the Cougars are just one game off the pace behind 6-0 Klein and one game ahead of Klein Oak and Klein Collins, both of whom are 4-2 through April 1.

Tomball wrapped up the first round of district play April 1 against Klein Collins (results were unavailable at press time last week) and will be looking to avenge their only loss on April 6 when they play their biggest game of the season against Klein.

In both teams’ district openers on March 17, the Klein Bearkats edged Tomball 4-3. The Cougars quickly recovered and won their next five, but if they want any shot at a district title, they will likely need to take care of the Bearkats this week.

In their five wins so far in 2010, the Cougars have averaged 9.6 runs per game, while allowing only 1.4 runs per game.

On March 30, the Cougars took on longtime nemesis Spring Lions, who so far look to be suffering a rare down year, going 3-3 through six games. Playing on the road, the Cougars took a quick 3-0 lead over the Lions after the first inning. Tomball scored another run in the second and plated two more in the third to take a commanding 6-0 lead.

The Cougars added two more in the fifth and another in the sixth to go up 9-0, but the Lions had some life left in them. Spring scored four times in the sixth to put a scare in Tomball, but it was too little, too late.

David Rumsey took the win, while Aaron Bostick was tagged with the loss for the Lions. Luke Plucheck and Jared De La Cruz each homered for the Cougars.
