Tomball, Magnolia making noise with postseason runs

It’s a great time of year to be a fan of local high school sports. Both Magnolia and Tomball High Schools have once again made noise in the postseason with each schools’ baseball and softball team making playoff runs.

All four squads were in action over the weekend in their respective playoff series’, but results were unavailable at press time.

The Lady Bulldogs and Lady Cougars softball teams competed in the area round of the UIL playoffs last weekend, one week after dispatching their first round opponents. Each team played a best-of-three series, which kicked off Thursday, May 13.

Magnolia took the early series lead against Nederland with a 2-1 victory on the road. The Lady Bulldogs scored a run each in the first and second innings, which was enough to hold off Nederland for the victory.

Game Two of the series was held May 14 and, if necessary, a decisive Game Three was scheduled for May 15.

The winner of the Magnolia-Nederland match-up will face either Friendswood or Sante Fe in the regional semi-finals this week.

The Lady Cougars were not so fortunate in their opening game of the regional quarterfinals. Tomball took on Cedar Park, the 16-5A champions, in the area round. After four scoreless innings in Game One, Cedar Park plated four in the fifth, more than enough to top the Lady Cougars’ lone run in the top of the sixth. Cedar Park added four more in the bottom of the sixth to put the game out of reach.

Tomball would need to sweep the final two games of the series, both at Cedar Park High School, to advance to the regional semi-finals. The winner of the Tomball-Cedar Park series will face either Mesquite Horn or A&M Consolidated in the regional semi-finals.

Meanwhile, their male counterparts also took to the field last weekend in the area round of the playoffs.

After a classic two games to one series victory over longtime rival The Woodlands in the first round, the Tomball Cougars took on Leander in a best-of-three series at Dell Diamond, site of the state baseball finals, last weekend.

Meanwhile, the Bulldog baseball squad moved on to face Cypress-Mauriceville beginning May 14, with Game One played at Baytown Sterling Ridge and Games Two and Three at Texas A&M’s Olsen Field.

Results of all four playoff series are available online at www.uil.texas.edu.
