Adair leads Lady Bulldogs in district opener with perfect game

Katy Adair made sure that despite a bit of rough going in the tournament season for the Magnolia Lady Bulldog softball team, that the start of district play would be both successful and memorable.

Adair threw a perfect game, no-hitter March 4 in the Lady Bulldogs’ 18-4A opener against Waller at Magnolia High School. Adair struck out 14 Waller hitters while facing the minimum over seven innings.

The Lady Bulldog offense provided her plenty of support, scoring eight runs, including six in the sixth inning.

The dominating performance was just what the Lady Bulldogs needed to right their ship after facing stiff competition in the Bryan Varsity Tournament earlier this season.

Magnolia went 2-3 in the tournament, facing stellar programs such as Round Rock Westwood, Alvin and Alamo Heights, each of which handed Magnolia losses.

The Lady Bulldogs faced a late-round match up with rival Magnolia West, a game that did not count toward the district standings despite both playing in 18-4A. In that contest, the Lady Bulldogs came away with the 7-1 win for one of their two victories in the tournament.

Across town, The Magnolia West Lady Mustangs completed their non-district season 6-7, while going 2-4 in the Bryan Tournament. Their lone wins came against San Antonio Clark and Victoria Memorial.

Since then, Magnolia West has gained their footing with victories over Clear Lake, New Caney, Madisonville and South Houston.

The Lady Mustangs dropped their district opener, 7-2, to Willis on March 4.

Meanwhile, leading the way in class 5A is perennial softball powerhouse Tomball, which is off to its typical fast start. At 5-1 overall and 1-0 early on district, the Lady Cougars will no doubt be in the hunt for a district 13-5A title.

Junior pitching ace Shelby Lancaster returns this year to lead a staff that has long been the strength of coach Benita Dunlavy’s teams. So far this year, the Lady Cougars have collected wins over Cy Falls, Clear Brook, Cinco Ranch, Oak Ridge and an 11-6 victory in the district opener March 4 over Klein.

The Lady Cougars’ lone loss was to long time nemesis Elkins, a 7-6 defeat in the Bryan Varsity Tournament late last month. Tomball took part in the Missouri City Varsity Tournament last weekend. Results of those games were unavailable at press time.

Following that tournament, the Cougars’ will play their remaining games against district opponents.
