Magnolia softball, baseball stay hot in postseason

The postseason keeps on rolling for Magnolia High School, with its softball and baseball teams earning late-round series victories recently to advance in their respective brackets on their way to competing for a state title.

Each team won its weekend playoff series May 14-15 and advanced to play another round on May 20 and 21, with final results unavailable at press time.

However, the Magnolia softball and baseball teams each picked up the early lead in their respective series by winning Game One May 20.

One week after sweeping Nederland in the Class 4A Region 3 quarterfinals, the Lady Bulldogs were matched up with district 24-4A runner-up Santa Fe in the regional semifinals.

With a berth in the regional finals up for grabs, Magnolia grabbed the early momentum with a 4-2 win at the Waco ISD softball complex.

After the two teams remained scoreless through the first three innings, the Lady Bulldogs got on the board in the top of the fourth with a run to go up 1-0. But Santa Fe answered with a run of their own in the bottom of the inning, tying the game at 1-1.

In the fifth, Magnolia broke through with three runs, led by Victoria Birdwell’s home run, for a 4-1 lead.

Santa Fe put together a mild rally in the sixth, plating a run to make it 4-2, but that’s as close as they would come to the Lady Bulldogs.

The Region 3 softball playoffs, with four teams remaining, have been pared down to participants in just two districts: 18-4A and 24-4A.

The winner of the Magnolia-Santa Fe series will take on either Montgomery (18-4A champions) or Angleton (24-4A winners) in the regional finals with a state playoff spot on the line.

Meanwhile, the Magnolia Bulldog baseball team continued to roll through the playoffs with a rain-shortened 9-4 win over Cypress Mauriceville in the area round of the 4A Region 3 playoffs.

Originally scheduled as a three-game series, the rain-soaked weekend of May 14 forced the series to just one game, which Magnolia won to move on to the regional quarterfinals.

There they took on Port Neches Grove where Game One was held May 20 at Port Neches Grove. The Bulldogs earned a huge win on the road, 8-5, with Game Two to be played at Magnolia High School.

The winner of that series will advance to the regional semifinals and play either Waltrip or Friendswood.
