| Magnolia, Tomball fill all-district teams after state playoff runs |
|
After the success of the Tomball and Magnolia High School softball teams, it comes as no surprise to see the proliferation of postseason awards feature several Lady Bulldogs and Lady Cougars. After going 34-12 overall and 12-3 in district 18-4A, the Lady Bulldogs made it all the way to the state title game before being knocked off by Pearland. Their impressive season resulted in nine Lady Bulldogs being named All-District performers, and two, Katy Adair and Victoria Birdwell, being named to the All-State team. Along with Adair and Birdwell, Ariel Hovis, Jessica Harrison, Kassi Mushinski and Emily Cox were named to the 18-4A All-District First Team.
Adair was the ace of the Lady Bulldog staff, going 22-9 this season with a 1.59 ERA, striking out 233 in 203 innings pitched. Birdwell was one of the team’s leading hitters, batting .375 for the season with 15 hits and 20 runs scored. Other offensive leaders for Magnolia were Baimbridge with a .394 average, Harrison (.341), Musinksi (.333) and Hovis (.321). Following a 10-12 season, the Magnolia West Lady Mustangs put six players on the All-District team with Chelsea Lemons, Taylor Yancey and Cyndee Sanders earning First Team nods and Heather Peacock and Kaylee Kucharski getting Second Team recognition. Yancey went 6-2 this year with a 2.21 ERA for the Lady Bulldogs. After a 31-10 regular season that ended in the state semi-finals, the Tomball Lady Cougars placed 11 players on the All-District team, including District 13-5A MVP Renada Davis. Davis was an offensive juggernaut for the Lady Cougars this year, hitting a team-high .446 with 29 hits and 13 RBI. Joining her on the First Team were pitcher Shelby Lancaster, infielders Katie Doerre, Sara Clark and Sarah Huey and outfielder Michelle Quinn. Making Second Team All-District were pitcher Kandace Patek, infielder Chris Martin, outfielders Lauren Perkins and Alyssa Bass and utility player Kassie Patek. Lancaster went 15-5 for the Lady Cougars with a 3.19 ERA and 141 strikeouts in 90 innings. Quinn (5-1) and Kandace Patek (5-1) proved to be solid backups in the circle for Tomball. Other offensive leaders this year for Tomball were Huey with a .446 average, 25 hits and 15 runs scored, Bass, who hit .396, Quinn (.394) and Doerre (.368). Kelsey Vincent led the Lady Cougars with 26 RBI while batting (.373).
