Area baseball teams’ success reflected in All-District picks

Now that the 2010 high school baseball season is in the rearview mirror, and with it, the rest of high school sports contests for the year, districts have released their All-District teams. After qualifying for the playoffs, both Tomball and Magnolia High Schools were well represented, as was Magnolia West, which missed out on the postseason.

The Magnolia Bulldogs finished their season 26-10 overall and 12-2 in 18-4A play, good enough for second in the district behind Brenham. The Bulldogs won their first two playoffs series before falling to Port Neches-Grove in the regional quarterfinals.

Their success helped land the Bulldogs six players on either the First or Second Team All-District this year, led by pitcher Derrick Barosh, a unanimous selection by 18-4A coaches. Barosh went 9-3 with a 1.29 ERA for the Bulldogs as the team ace. Other First Team selections for Magnolia were infielder Brett Thornell and outfielder Alec Hall.

Making the Second Team was pitcher Joe Kirkland and utility player Jarred Greene.

Infielder Duncan Wendell was named Newcomer of the Year after hitting .375 with 18 RBI.

The Magnolia West Mustangs went 12-12 overall this year and 5-8 in district play. They placed two players on the First Team, pitcher Scott Walton and outfielder Casey Martinez.

Martinez was an offensive machine for the Mustangs, hitting an astounding .489 for the season. Earning Second Team honors was designated hitter Tyler Widiker.

The unanimous choice for district MVP was Brenham’s Chance Bolcereck.

After a 10-4 district season which saw them tie for second with the Klein Collins Tigers, the Tomball Cougars placed seven players on the 13-5A All-District team.

Getting First Team nods was pitcher Tyler Smith, the ace of the Cougar staff and outfielder Luke Pluchek, who was also named Second Team All Greater Houston.

Named to the Second Team were pitcher Tyler Rumsey, catcher Jared de la Cruz, first baseman Brett Berlin, shortstop T.J. Anderson and outfielder Nick Banks.

The MVP of the district was Rob Tasin of Klein.
