MHS, MWHS swim and dive have big day at state meet

MISDSwimmers Even though students from Magnolia ISD’s swim and dive teams were unable to come away with a gold medal at the Class 4A State Swim and Dive Meet in Austin in February, both Magnolia and Magnolia West featured several high finishers and 12 All-State selections.

 

Magnolia’s Laykin Lowry and Magnolia West’s Allie Sullins each narrowly missed winning state championships in their respective events. Lowry finished second in the 200-meter freestyle, while Sullins was just .19 seconds away from a gold medal in the 100-meter backstroke.

 

In addition to her silver medal in the freestyle, Lowry also came away with a bronze medal in the 500-meter freestyle, as well as in the 400-meter freestyle relay. She also finished fifth in the 200-meter medley relay. Lowry was named first team All-State and earned All-American consideration.

 

Sullins, who holds eight school records, was also named first team All-State and was named an All-American in the 100-meter backstroke.

 

Magnolia West’s Noel Niccum holds fives school records and finished ninth in the 200-meter individual medley and sixth in the 100-meter breakstroke. Niccum was also named first team All-State.

 

Matt Korman finished 11th in the 200-meter individual medley, earning second team All-State recognition. Spencer Mather earned a top 10 spot in 1-meter diving and a second team All-State nod.

 

Eric Plachy was busy at the state meet, finishing 10th in the 200-meter individual medley, eighth in the 500-meter freestyle, third in the 400-meter freestyle relay and eighth in the 200-meter freestyle relay on her way to first team All-State and All-American consideration.

 

Lauren Benner took 10th in the 100-meter breaststroke, fifth in the 200-meter medley relay and eighth in the 200-meter freestyle relay. She was named second team All-State.

 

Erin Drake, second team All-State finished eighth in the 200-meter freestyle relay, and team captain Nehemiah Niccum earned first team All-State honors after finishing fifth in the 100-mtere breaststroke.

 

Other standouts included Mackenzie Childs, who won bronze in the 400-meter freestyle relay, fifth in the 200-meter medley relay, 12th in the 100-meter backstroke and 15th in the 50-meter freestyle. Childs was also named first team All-State and received All-American consideration.

 

Christie Salinas won bronze in the 400-meter freestyle relay, eighth in the 200-meter freestyle relay, fifth in the 200-meter medley relay, and seventh in the 100-meter freestyle. Salinas earned first team All-State and All-American consideration.

 

On the diving board, Tori Lehmann finished eighth in the 1-meter dive on her way to first team All-State honors.
