Tomball, Magnolia among 76 teams in annual volleyball tourney

ths volleyball Both the Tomball Lady Cougars and the Magnolia Lady Bulldogs were one of nearly 80 teams from across the state to travel to southeast Houston last weekend to take part in what has become the biggest annual volleyball event outside of the state tournament.

The 2010 Pearland Volleyball Classic drew 76 teams from all classifications in Texas to a three-day tournament beginning Thursday, Aug. 26. Games were held at four Pearland ISD campuses on 10 courts.

The 76 teams were seeded by Pearland High School head volleyball coach John Turner and grouped into 19 divisions.

After the three-game pool play round on Aug. 27, both local teams held a 2-1 record, good enough to send both teams into the Gold Round bracket on Aug. 28. Results of those games and those throughout the weekend, were unavailable at press time.

The Lady Bulldogs were assigned to Division 4, along with Stony Point, Ft. Bend Travis and Marcus, the division’s top seed.

Magnolia, seeded second in the division and 35th in the overall rankings, beat Stony Point in Game One (25-20, 25-18), Travis (25-19, 25-23) in Game Two before falling to Marcus (25-15, 25-13) in Game Three.

By going 2-1 in pool play, Magnolia moved on to compete in bracket play. They took on Georgetown, ranked 30 overall, on Aug. 27.

Meanwhile, the Lady Cougars competed in Division 14 and seeded 52 in the tournament. Tomball was grouped with Westwood (14), McKinney Boyd (25) and Cy-Ranch (63).

In their first game, the Lady Cougars pulled off, based solely on seedings, what could be considered an upset by knocking off Westwood (25-19, 25-17). McKinney Boyd won Game Two of the bracket, defeating the Lady Cougars (25-20, 25-19), but Tomball rallied to win Game Three over Cy-Ranch (25-15, 25-18).

Tomball moved on to the Gold Round bracket to play 11th-seeded Grapevine on Aug. 27.
