| Cougars win in another blowout |
|
If the first two games of the 2010 high school football season are any indication of how the rest of the year will go, Tomball Cougar football fans could be in for quite a ride. For the second straight week, the Cougars came away with a blowout win, this time over 17-5A non-district opponent Jersey Village on Sept. 3 at Tomball High School. The Falcons were never really in it, with the Cougar defense providing a sign of how the night would go early in the first quarter when they scored a safety to go up 2-0. Later in the first, the Tomball defense again put points on the board when Malcolm Scott returned an interception 30 yards for a touchdown to put the Cougars up 9-0. It was Scott’s second pick-six in two weeks. The Falcons managed a pair of Hunter Pullig field goals in the second quarter to cut the lead to 9-6, but the Cougar offense made their first showing on the scoreboard when Hunter Thompson scored on an 18-yard touchdown pass from Justin Dvorak. That put the Cougars up 16-6 at halftime. The second half was all Tomball, as Dvorak scored on a pair of short yardage touchdowns in the third quarter and Thomas McHugh returned an interception 41 yards for a touchdown. Robert Vines scored from a yard out in the fourth to make it 43-6. It turned out that the scoring contest between the Cougars’ offense (28 points) and the team’s defense (15 points) was closer than the one against the Falcons. In two games, the Cougars have outscored their opponents 88-22, after blowing out Morton Ranch 45-16 in the season’s opening week. Last week, the Cougars took on Mayde Creek in the non-district finale for both teams. Results of that game were unavailable at press time last week. Next up for the Cougars is the district opener against Westfield, Sept. 24 at 7 p.m. at Cougar Stadium. Summer Creek 23, Magnolia 21 The Summer Creek Bulldogs, playing just their second ever varsity game, earned the school’s first gridiron victory with a Week One upset of the Magnolia Bulldogs. Summer Creek’s Jhonny Evans scored on a five-yard touchdown run midway through the fourth quarter to put the Bulldogs up 23-21. But the Magnolia offense couldn’t break through late and overcome the two-point deficit. The loss dropped Magnolia to 0-2. The Bulldogs host Northbrook Sept. 24 at 7:30 p.m. in the district opener. Kingwood Park 24, Magnolia West 21 The Kingwood Park Panthers used a Ryley Richardson 35-yard field goal with just over a minute left to edge the Magnolia West Mustangs Sept. 3 at Mustang Stadium to go to 2-0 on the season. Magnolia West’s Joey Richardson scored on a four-yard pass from Tyler Anderson to tie the game at 21-21 late in the fourth, but the Panthers managed to charge into Mustang territory on their ensuing possession and get into Richardson’s range for the game-winning field goal. The Mustangs fall to 1-1 with the loss and travel to take on district rival Brenham Sept. 24 at 7:30 p.m.
