Cougars roll to 3-0 in third straight lopsided victory

The Tomball Cougar football team is making all of this look much easier than it really is. Through three games, the Cougars are 3-0, with each win coming in blowout fashion. So far this year, Tomball has outscored its opponents 130-32.

The latest victim was the Mayde Creek Rams, who on Sept. 10 in Katy were run off the field by the Cougars 42-10.

The Cougars’ spread attack was too much for Mayde Creek to contain, with quarterback Justin Dvorak enjoying his best passing game of the season, going 16-for-20 for 230 yards and five touchdown passes.

Three of those went to Montrell Logan, who caught a total of five passes for 110 yards. The Dvorak-to-Logan connection put the Cougars on the board early when the two hooked up for a 23-yard scoring pass less than three minutes into the first quarter.

The extra-point failed, but Tomball running back Brandon Green found the end zone on a 3-yard run shortly after to put the Cougars up 13-0. Green rushed for 43 yards on seven carries for the night.

Mayde Creek got on the board early in the second when quarterback Blake Doubleday scored on a 2-yard run to cut the lead to 13-7. Doubleday was the offensive standout for the Rams, rushing for 97 yards on 24 carries.

The Cougars then put the game out of reach quickly, scoring on two Dvorak touchdown passes, one to Logan from 20 yards out and one to Hunter Thompson from 5 yards.

Those two touchdowns, plus a two-point conversion, put the Cougars up 28-7. Mayde Creek added a Jan Pedroza 41-yard field goal just before the half to make it 28-10, but the game was all but settled.

With the big lead, the Cougar offense hit the brakes in the second half, scoring one touchdown in the third and fourth, both on long Dvorak passes.

After a week off last week, the Cougars will open district play with a tough test against Westfield, Sept. 24 at 7 p.m. at Cougar Stadium.

Magnolia West 42, Willis 32

Mustang running back Desmond Richard had what is likely the marquee performance in the brief history of the Magnolia West High School football program as he rushed for a record-setting 321 yards on 40 carries in his team’s 42-32 win over Willis Sept. 10.

Richards scored all six of the Mustangs touchdowns en route to their second non-district win of the season and putting the rest of 18-4A on notice that, at the very least, the Magnolia West ground game will be a force to be reckoned with this season.

Also adding to the mix was running back Joey Johnson, who carried the ball six times for 65 yards, averaging an impressive 10.8 yards per carry.

The win improves the Mustangs to 2-1, with the win over Willis closing out district play. Magnolia West had their bye week last week and will travel take on Brenham Sept. 24 at 7:30 p.m.

Both the Waller and Magnolia Bulldog football teams had their weeks off on Sept. 10. Magnolia played their final non-district contest Sept. 17 at Westbury, while Waller closed out non-district against Richmond Foster the same evening.

Results of both games were unavailable at press time last week.
