| Cougars crash back to reality with shutout loss to Klein Collins |
|
Despite the Tomball Cougars’ unexpected and much-celebrated 5-0 start, it was probably too much to expect for Tommy Kaiser’s feisty squad to topple the mighty Klein Collins Tigers Oct. 8 at Tomball High School.
Indeed, the Tigers, coming off a 12-1 season and bringing their own undefeated record into the match-up, were too much for the Cougars to handle, coming away with an easy 42-0 win.
The game turned ominous quickly for Tomball when Klein Collins went up 14-0 in the first quarter on a pair of long Tiger touchdown runs, the first on 46 yards from Charles Jackson and the second, a Shane Rhodes 51-yard score with just over a minute left in the quarter.
While the Cougar defense kept it close for the remainder of the half keeping the Tigers off the scoreboard, their offense was unable to get much going and was shutout.
Down by just two scores going into the second half, the Cougars had reason for optimism. But any hopes of upset were quickly dashed in the third quarter when the Tigers scored 21 unanswered points, highlighted by a pair of Marquise Cardinal touchdown runs, one from 19 yards out and the second, which perhaps was the Cougars’ backbreaker, for 94 yards.
Marcus Goodwin added a 23-yard run late in the third to put the Tigers up 35-0 and the game was all but over. With the backups playing the fourth, Dillon Owings’ 1-yard plunge made the game 42-0 and the Cougars suffered their first defeat of the season.
While the loss may have tempered the excitement in Cougar country, Tomball is still in excellent position to earn one of the district’s four post season berths. The difficult tests continued last week for Tomball, as the Cougars took on Dekaney, a team with an identical 5-1 record.
Results of that game were unavailable at press time.
Stratford 28, Magnolia 7
The Magnolia Bulldogs suffered their first defeat of the district season Oct. 8 when the Stratford Spartans came away with a 28-7 win in Magnolia.
With the game tied at 7-7 going in the second half, the Spartan defense held the Bulldog offense scoreless the rest of the way, scoring 21 unanswered points to improve to 2-1 in 18-4A.
Stratford’s Tim Burton ran for 181 yards on 26 carries and scored three touchdowns. Meanwhile, the Bulldog offense was only able to generate 263 yards of total offense, most of which came from the dual threat running attack of Jordan Schuetz (58 yards on 18 carries) and Chase Gragert (61 yards on 13 carries).
The lone Bulldog touchdown came in the first quarter when Gragert scored on a 2-yard run.
The Bulldogs took on Magnolia West in the latest edition of the heated cross-town rivalry on Oct. 15. Results of that game were unavailable at press time.
Magnolia West 48, Northbrook 7
The Magnolia West Mustangs picked up their first district win of the season over a struggling Northbrook Raiders team on Oct. 8, 48-7.
The Mustangs generated 448 yards of total offense, 233 of which came courtesy of Desmond Richards, who ran for 233 yards on 25 carries and three touchdowns. Richards is quickly establishing himself as one of the top running backs in the district this season.
Two of those touchdowns came in the first half, as the Mustangs built an insurmountable 27-0 lead going into halftime.
Magnolia West’s Joey Johnson added two touchdowns of his own, one rushing, one receiving.
The Mustang defense limited the Raiders to just 176 yards of total offense.
