Cougars win first playoff game in 22 years

The dream season for the Tomball Cougar football team continued Nov. 12 when the Cougars, in their first playoff game since 1988, handled the Kingwood Mustangs, 27-3.

The first round match-up in the Class 5A Region II playoffs was held at Thorne Stadium in Aldine and featured the 8-2 Cougars versus the 3-7 Mustangs.

The disparity in season records translated to the field when the Cougars took an early 6-0 lead on a 10-yard touchdown pass from Justin Dvorak to Caleb Robinson. The Dillon Duarte kick failed.

The Mustangs put their only points on the board early in the second quarter when kicker Mitch Glander made a 24-yard field goal to cut the lead to 6-3, Tomball.

Just before halftime, Dvorak would add his second touchdown pass of the night when he connected with Montrell Logan on a 5-yard scoring strike to put the Cougars up 13-6.

In the second half, the Cougar defense shut down the Mustang offense. Kingwood managed just 123 yards of total offense, compared to Tomball’s 390. The Mustangs picked up only eight first downs while Tomball converted for 24.

The Cougars added two more touchdowns in the second half, one each in the third and fourth quarters. Dvorak contributed his third touchdown of the night in the third quarter with an 11-yard run, and Aaron Obidigbo caught a Dvorak touchdown pass for 17 yards in the fourth.

Dvorak finished the night 14-of-19 passing for 148 yards, three touchdowns and one interception. He also ran 16 times for 122 yards and a touchdown.

Tomball advanced to take on Austin Anderson (10-1) in the area round. The game was held Friday, Nov. 19 at Cub Stadium in Brenham. Results of that game were unavailable at press time.

Willis 46, Magnolia West 45

Making its first playoff appearance since the school’s inception, the Magnolia West Mustangs lost a heartbreaker to the Willis Wildkats Nov. 13 at Woodforest Stadium in Shenendoah, 46-45.

In the bi-district round of the Class 4A Region III playoffs, the Mustangs (6-5) took on an 8-2 Willis team that finished second in 18-4A.

The two teams combined for more than 900 yards of total offense and 12 touchdowns in a shootout that was among the highest scoring and most exciting in the first round of the playoffs.

The Mustangs led 45-38 in the closing minutes of the fourth quarter when the Wildkats drove the length of the field to set up a scoring chance from the 2-yard line.

Willis receiver Autrey Golden caught a short pass from Fred Nixon for a touchdown, which brought the Wildkats to within one, 45-44. But rather than kick the extra point and hope for overtime, the Wildkats opted to go for two and the win.

Nixon found Quan West for a successful two-point conversion and the Willis defense was finally able to stop the Mustangs.

Standout running back Desmond Richards ran for 181 yards on 35 carries and three touchdowns for the Mustangs, while quarterback Tyler Anderson went 17-for-22 and 220 yards passing.

Richards scored on three long plays, including a 74-yard pass from Anderson for the game’s first touchdown.

Late in the third quarter, Richards returned a Willis kickoff 97 yards for a touchdown.
