MHS hoops look to carry strong start into district play

If results in non-district play are any indicator of how the Magnolia Bulldogs’ boy’s basketball team will fare in 17-4A play, area hoops fans could be in for an exciting season.

So far this year, the Bulldogs have amassed an 11-4 record with one game remaining in non-district play, Monday Dec. 13 against Willis.

Magnolia started out strong, winning their first six games of the season over A&M Consolidated (61-57), Lufkin (74-39), Lamar Consolidated (60-51), Westfield (54-49), Kingwood Park (52-46) and Conroe (62-41).

Of those six wins, four came against Class 5A opponents.

The Bulldogs hit their first speed bump in the season in late November when they finally lost, 58-53, to Ft. Bend Clement and again to San Antonio Brennan in the Seguin Tournament.

Magnolia went 3-3 in that event, beating San Antinio Alamo Heights twice and Pleasanton.

The Bulldogs start district play Friday, Dec. 17 against Houston Stratford and will be looking for at least a repeat of the 2009-10 season in which they finished 21-11 overall and 9-5 in district play, good for third in 18-4A.

This season marks Magnolia’s first in 17-4A, with familiar district foes such as Magnolia West, Brenham, Waller and Montgomery, as well as new rivals Stratford, Northbrook and Spring Woods.

So far this year, the Bulldogs are led by junior guard Jesse Jones, who leads the team in scoring with 15.3 points per game. Senior Jarard Hood has also been a major offensive force for Magnolia, scoring 14.3 points per game. Cory Rueda (13.3 ppg) and James McDade (10.4 ppg) have also chipped in.

Meanwhile, the Tomball Cougars are looking to right their ship after a 6-6 start to the season.

The Cougars lost a stunner to Magnolia West in the season opener for both teams, 43-42. Tomball went on to lose three of its next four, but have since rallied to go 5-2 in their last seven games.

Tomball’s wins this season have come among Jersey Village, Summer Creek, Cy-Woods, Katy and Conroe.

The Cougars won’t begin district play for another three weeks, on Dec. 31 against Spring.

If Tomball is going to make a run at the playoffs this season, they likely will be lead by offensive standouts Marque Booker and Ronnie Harrison, both of whom are averaging 18.4 points per game.
