Coaches name selections for 17-4A All-District Team

As expected, the Brenham Cubs and Montgomery Bears were among the most represented on the 17-4A All-District team. But despite a 6-5 regular season, the Stratford Spartans saw 24 of its players named.

Meanwhile, Waller, Magnolia and Magnolia West combined to place 25 players on the roster, one less than the entire Cub team that went 10-1.

The Magnolia West Mustangs, finishing the  season 6-5 and earning the school’s first-ever playoff berth, earned four First Team recognitions and five Second Team nods.

Senior center Beau Henry, junior running back Desmond Richards, senior defensive end Levi Whittington and senior inside linebacker Dalton Bynum were named to the First Team.

Richards was a unanimous selection among 17-4A coaches after rushing for 1,786 yards and 24 touchdowns.

Earning Second Team honors for the Mustangs were senior fullback Joey Johnson, senior defensive end Joe Beaver, senior defensive tackle Tyler Hadley, senior inside linebacker McCade Trim and junior safety Justin Williams.

The Magnolia Bulldogs had a disappointing 2010 season, going just 2-8 overall and 2-5 in district play. They earned just one First Team nod and four Second Team picks.

Magnolia’s lone First Team representative was fullback Chance David, whose primary role was as a blocking back in the Bulldogs’ option offense. David did run for 324 yards and five touchdowns on the year.

Second Team honors went to senior quarterback Jordan Schuetz and senior Dominic Leabo, who was named to the team as a wide receiver and cornerback.

After a deep playoff run in 2009, the Waller Bulldogs suffered a down year in 2010, finishing 4-6 overall and 3-4 in district play, missing the playoffs by one game.

Despite failing to qualify for the postseason, the Bulldogs placed a respectable 12 players on the All-District squad, including four First Teamers and eight Second Teamers.

Among those First Team recognitions were junior offensive tackle Matt Leviner, senior defensive end Trent Rape, senior defensive tackle Jacobie White and junior inside linebacker Colton Robinson.

Sophomore offensive guard Derek Eckermann, senior tailback David McDade, junior wide receiver D.J. Johnson, junior defensive tackle Jordan Hamilton, senior outside linebacker Jordan Gooden, junior safety Hunter Schmidt, junior cornerback Jyrin Broussard and senior all-purpose player Chris Carroll garnered Second Team recognitions.

The coaches for 17-4A were generous in their selections this year, naming 100 players to the All-District team. Brenham had the most with 26, followed by Stratford with 24 and Montgomery with 20.

Montgomery made the deepest run in the playoffs, losing the Division 1 state quarterfinals to Friendswood.
