| Lady Cougars’ struggles continue in district play |
|
The Tomball Lady Cougar basketball team is no doubt wanting to hit the “restart” button on the 13-5A district season. The Lady Cougars fell to 0-4 in 2010-11 in district play after losing to the Klein Forest Golden Eagles 49-38 Jan. 4 at Tomball High School. The game was Tomball’s first after a seven-day layoff during the school district’s Christmas vacation. The rust from the extended break was slow to wear off for both teams as the Golden Eagles and Lady Cougars combined to score just seven points in the first quarter. But the rust wore off quicker for Klein Forest than it did for Tomball as the Golden Eagles netted 15 points in the second quarter, compared to just eight for Tomball. At halftime, Klein Forest led 19-11. The Lady Cougars rallied in the third period, outscoring Klein Forest 17-11 to draw to within just two, 30-28. But the fourth quarter was all Klein Forest as the Golden Eagles pulled away quickly and decisively, outpacing the Lady Cougars 19-0 on their way to the 11-point victory. Klein Forest’s Desiree Davis led all scorers with 15 points. Allayna Waters was Tomball’s top scorer with 12 points. The Lady Cougars struggled from the field all evening, shooting just 36 percent, or 11-of-30. Meanwhile, the Golden Eagles’ shooting accuracy was a primary factor in their win after they shot 15-of-36 from the field at a 41 percent rate. The defeat was Tomball’s fourth straight to kick off district play. They also fell to Klein Oak 36-24, to Westfield 51-40 and to Spring 36-30. The Lady Cougars play next Tuesday, Jan. 11 when they travel to take on Klein Collins at 7 p.m. While the Lady Cougars were struggling to make baskets in Tomball, the Magnolia Bulldogs boys squad continued their early season success against their cross-town rival Magnolia West. The Bulldogs improved to 15-5 overall and 1-1 in 17-4A play with a 57-39 win against the Mustangs at Magnolia West High School. The game was all but over as quickly as it began, with Magnolia storming out to a stunning 25-5 first quarter lead. After that, the Bulldogs put the brakes on the offense, scoring just four points in the second quarter, but still led 29-11 at halftime. Things evened out in the second half with each team putting up 28 points. But the game had long been decided and the Bulldogs came away with their first district win, while the Mustangs dropped their 17-4A opener.
