Bulldog football named Houston area’s best sportsmen

mhs award Even though all did not go according to plan for the Magnolia Bulldog football team in 2010, the program has garnered a prestigious post season accolade for their performance last season.

On Jan. 27 the Magnolia High School football program was presented with the 2010 Sportsmanship of the Year Award for Class 4A by the Touchdown Club of Houston during a ceremony at the J.W. Marriott.

Magnolia was chosen among 18 4A schools in the greater Houston area that qualified for the award. The criteria for the award includes actions of the team and coaches at games, actions of the support groups such as parents, band and pep squads at games and “respect for the American flag.”

Voting on the award were members of the Houston Chapter of the Texas Association of Sports Officials, which includes game officials and referees.

“It means a lot,” Bulldog head football coach Andy Sexton said. “It’s nice to be recognized. We’re always, and rightfully so, viewed on wins and losses, but it’s nice to be recognized for doing things the right way.”

The Bulldogs finished 2-8 overall last year, but despite the lack of wins, the Bulldogs were recognized for their gamesmanship.

Sexton said he and his staff consciously work to instill values and principles into the student athletes in the football program.

“I think that’s something that we absolutely consciously do,” he said. “We want our kids to have character and integrity. You don’t always see that.”

In a prepared statement last week, the school recognized all who made the award possible.

“This award is presented, won and shared not only by the football team, but everyone who makes Friday nights at the Dog Pound so great: parents, fans, cheerleaders, band, color guard, trainers, drill team and students.”
