Former Cougar pole vaulter Bentley among best at national college meet

bentley Tomball High School graduate Alex Bentley, who currently attends the University of Houston, competed in the 2011 National Pole Vault Summit in Reno, Nev. recently.  More than 900 pole vaulters competed in various age groups.  Bentley placed second overall in the highest category of competitors, the “Open A” category, with an opening height of 4.85 meters, or 15’11”.   

 

Bentley started the competition by clearing his first two heights of 5.05 meters (16’7”) and 5.15 meters (16’11”) on his first attempts. With no misses, Bentley was in first place and only two other vaulters advanced to 5.25 meters (17’3”).  Only one vaulter from Jamaica cleared the height on his last attempt.  

 

Bentley is in his last year of competition at UH and has recovered from an injury to his left ankle. He has already jumped a Regional qualifying height of 16’6” and if he clears 17’3,” he will qualify for Nationals in both indoor and outdoor.
