Lady Bulldogs win in first round, boys’ team set for playoffs

The Magnolia Lady Bulldog basketball team got off to a great start to the Class 4A Region 3 playoffs Feb. 15 with a first round victory over Willis.

After winning 17-4A with a 12-2 district record, the Lady Bulldogs were matched up against the Lady Wildkats, who finished as the fourth place team in 18-4A, in the first round of the playoffs.

The Lady Bulldogs came away with a 9-point win, 56-47 on the strength of 19 points by sophomore guard Ashley Richardson. She also contributed four rebounds, two steals and two assists to complete her stellar performance.

Sophomore forward Allison Abendschein and junior guard Amy Henry scored 10 points each to help the Lady Bulldogs move on to the second round.

The victory sent Magnolia to the area round to take on Beaumont Ozen, the runners-up in 20-4A. Ozen blew out Houston North Forest 84-31 in the first round.

The Lady Bulldogs and Beaumont Ozen played their second round playoff game Friday, Feb. 19. Results of that game were unavailable at press time last week.

The winner of the game will move on to the Region 3 quarterfinals where they will take on either 19-4A winner Barbers Hill or 17-4A third place finisher Brenham.

The win improved the Lady Bulldogs’ 2010-11 record to 17-8 overall.

Meanwhile, their male counterparts locked up the district’s second place spot last week by winning their final two games over Northbrook and Spring Woods. The Bulldogs had an outside shot of winning the district, but the first place Stratford Spartans also won their final two games of the regular season.

Magnolia will take on the Huntsville Hornets, the third place finisher in 18-4A and a squad who finished their district season with a 10-3 record.

At press time last week, the fourth and final playoff spot in 17-4A had yet to be determined. The Magnolia West Mustangs were locked in a tie with the Montgomery Bears each with 7-7 district marks.

The two played a tie-breaking game Friday, Feb. 19 to determine who was to earn the district’s final playoff spot. Results of that game were unavailable at press time.

The Mustangs had a chance to solidify the final spot in the Feb. 15 season finale when Magnolia faced the Bears. But Montgomery edged the Bulldogs 34-32 to put off the Mustangs’ celebration for at least a few more days.

The winner of the Magnolia West-Montgomery tie-breaker will face the Humble Wildcats in the first round of the Class 4A Region 3 playoffs this week.
