MHS, MWHS track falter in team standings at MISD Invitational

Despite not finishing among the top three overall teams at the Feb. 26 Magnolia ISD Track and Field Invitational, both the Magnolia and Magnolia West squads saw several of its athletes take home individual honors.

Magnolia’s Lyndsey Stewart took home top pole vaulting honors after she cleared 10.06 meters while Magnolia West’s Gavin Davis was the gold medal winner in the boys’ 800-meter run. He finished the race in just under two minutes, edging Cy-Falls’ Shaun Vanderwalt.

Magnolia’s Emily Hill enjoyed a stellar meet, finishing second in both the girls’ 800-meter run (2:17) and the 1,600-meter run (5:22).

In the long distance girls’ 3,200-meter run, Magnolia’s Jordan Bishoff finished second with a time of 11:29.72. Teammates Bryttin Boyde and Ashley Perry finished fourth and fifth, respectively.

On the boys’ side, the Bulldogs’ Samuel Dufford finished second on the same race with a time of 10:03. In the 110-meter hurdles, Magnolia Wests’ Austin Simmons took home a silver medal with a time of 14.59 seconds, less than 4/10ths of a second behind winner Michael Lindberg of Kingwood Park.

Simmons also finished second in the 300-meter hurdles, falling to another Kingwood Park runner, Ian Ebow.

The Magnolia West girls’ high-jumping tandem of Kat Merner, Rachel Wolcott and Larkin Bailey excelled in that event. Merner finished second with a jump of 5.02 meters, Wolcott fourth (5 meters) and Bailey fifth (4.1) meters. Combined, the three earned 14 points for the Lady Mustang team, which accounted for nearly all the points the entire girls’ team would amass during the meet.

In the boys’ pole vault, Magonlia’s Jacob Sacchieri finished in a tie for second with a jump of 12 meters. The winner of the event, Kingwood Park’s Shawn Barber, leaped a staggering 15.06 meters.

In the boys’ shot put, Mustang Colton Davis finished third with a throw of 45 meters.

The final team results were disappointing for both schools who hosted the meet. On the girls’ side, Magnolia finished sixth with 46 points, while Magnolia West finished ninth with 19 points. The boys didn’t fare any better.

The Mustang track and field team finished seventh with 38.5 points, with the Magnolia squad in ninth place with 20 points.
