Lady Bulldogs begin district play with pair of wins

The Magnolia Lady Bulldog softball team is taking aim at a repeat performance of the 2010 season that saw them come two runs away from a state title.

Two games into district 18-4A play, the Lady Bulldogs were 2-0 with wins over Northbrook and Spring Woods. Magnolia took on Stratford Friday, March 11. Results of that game were unavailable at press time last week.

The Lady Bulldogs endured an up-and-down non-district season, going 8-6 facing stiff competition in some high profile tournaments.

In mid-February, Magnolia took part in the Bryan-College Station Tournament, which annually attracts some of the top teams in the state. Among those were the Tomball Lady Cougars, also a state playoff team from 2010.

The Cougars got the best of the Lady Bulldogs in College Station, but Magnolia managed wins over Huntington, Fort Bend Clements and Irving Nimitz in the tournament.

The following weekend Magnolia stayed closer to home for the Klein ISD tournament. There they earned wins over College Park, Cy-Ranch, Splendora, and Giddings while suffering losses to Klein and Katy.

A key component to the Lady Bulldogs’ winning record so far this year has been senior Amanda Shirley. Shirley has compiled a 6-1 record from the circle, one save and a 2.81 ERA in 42 innings pitched.

This week Magnolia will take on cross-town rival Magnolia West on Tuesday, March 15 at Magnolia West at 7 p.m. The Lady Bulldogs will follow that up hosting Brenham on Wednesday, March 16 at 7 p.m.
