| Cougars hope to stay on winning track in district |
|
The Tomball Cougar baseball team is hoping a rollercoaster non-district tournament season will translate into district success now that 13-5A play has begun in earnest. Through their first 15 games, the Cougars went an unremarkable 7-8, including a district-opening 7-6 loss to the Spring Lions March 15. The Cougars faced Klein Forest in the second 13-5A game of the year on March 18. Results of that game were unavailable at press time last week. The Cougars’ season began in late February when they took part in the CenTex Tournament in Round Rock where some of the state’s top teams are invited to play each year. The Cougars went 2-4 at the CenTex Tournament, earning victories over Westwood (14-1) and Southwest Christian (12-0). But Tomball struggled against some of the tournament’s stronger opponents, falling to Lake Travis (3-1), Pflugerville (6-1), Coronado (16-6) and Dallas Jesuit (7-3). Tomball followed up that performance with a dominant showing in the 9th Annual Ferrel Classic at Conroe High School. The Cougars went 4-0 in the event, beating Cy-Ridge (12-2), Cy-Fair (10-8), Cy-Woods (4-3) and Conroe (16-2). The Cougars weren’t able to maintain the momentum they gained in Conroe the following weekend in the Wings ‘N More Classic at College Park High School in The Woodlands. Tomball suffered defeats to Bryan (11-5), Kingwood (5-3) and Klein Collins (7-2). Their lone win came against tournament host College Park (11-7). The Cougars will next play March 22 when they travel to take on Klein at 7 p.m.
